The paper is devoted to the representation of time and space in Cristo si è fermato a Eboli. In Levi’s representation of space, the opposition of nature and culture is a thematic constant, which aims to present civilization as an unstable condition, threatened by a sterile nature, which cannot be modified by human labour; or, if space assumes the connotation of a mytic underworld, as a posthumous datum. Through this representation of Basilicata, the experience of exile assumes the narrative functions of an epic catabasis, and develops in a dimension of time not co-extensive to the plan of ordinary experience and not to be integrated into the linear chronology of history.

Abstract
The paper is devoted to the representation of time and space in Cristo si è fermato a Eboli. In Levi’s representation of space, the opposition of nature and culture is a thematic constant, which aims to present civilization as an unstable condition, threatened by a sterile nature, which cannot be modified by human labour; or, if space assumes the connotation of a mytic underworld, as a posthumous datum. Through this representation of Basilicata, the experience of exile assumes the narrative functions of an epic catabasis, and develops in a dimension of time not co-extensive to the plan of ordinary experience and not to be integrated into the linear chronology of history.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
