Abstract
The Sassi of Matera are located on a steep stone hill, where groups of houses stand parallel to the ground, overlapping, in concentric circles. They constitute an enormous architectural heritage inhabited until 1952 in prehistoric conditions, lacking basic habitability and urban services suitable for modern life. Matera offers a journey into the oldest history of humanity and its traditions: its adequate architectural requalification could in the future serve as a model for the conservation of urban ecosystems obtained thanks to the correct use of water resources, from the sole of the stone. The Murgia plateau is largely included in the metropolitan city of Bari and the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani and extends westward into the province of Matera in Basilicata; it also extends south to the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi.
