After some notes on the history of Theopompus' text (esp. on Phot. Bibl. cod.176, 120a6 ff.), this paper discusses the origins of the division into books of his historical work. A survey of the available evidence on stichometry and reclamantes points to the possibility that already in the 4th century BCE some authors (esp. Aristotle and Xenophon) divided their works into thematically consistent books, corresponding to rolls. These books, however, are likely to have been shorter (500 - 1500 lines) than the standard books of the Hellenistic and post-Hellenistic ages (which could amount up to 4000 lines). Abstract
