A short overview on new approaches to establish the detrimental effect of heavy metals on soil microbial biomass is given. Some of them have been utilised in describing the diversity of microbial communities living under different ecological constraints, and so far they have never been used for ecotoxicological studies. The potentiality of these tests in monitoring the toxic effect of xenobiotic compounds in soil is pointed out. INGLESE
