In this paper, we present an application of multivariate statistical analysis for characterising atmospheric pollutant concentrations and their sources profiles. We apply a combination of clustering and ordination technique (PCA) for underlining pollutant homogeneous sub-sets, with statistical significance, and for defining a new space of reduced dimensions in which we would investigate the relationships among different variables and evaluate the contribution of the different sources (traffic, industrial emissions, natural sources, etc.) to emissions patterns. Our goal is to carry out a robust analysis of correlation structure of observed data, in order to distinguish the impact of different emission sources and to investigate the relationships among causes and effects. Particularly we examine the daily concentration of TSP and its content of eight heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn), measured from April 1997 to December 1998 in our experimental site located in the industrial area of Tito Scalo (Basilicata, Southern Italy).
