The Periadriatic lineament is the Neogene fault system bounding the Alpine/Southalpine realms. In Western Trentino, it includes the eastern sector of the Tonale line, the Northern Giudicarie line and the Peio line. Along the Peio line, shear sense indicators indicate extensional left-lateral strike-slip (transtensive) movements which have probably been operating since Late Cretaceous. This tectonic phase led to the relative uplift of the Ortler nappe with respect to the Tonale-Ulten unit. The emplacement of the Northern Adamello and Presanella plutons during the Oligocene was partly synchronous with movements along the Tonale and a proto-Giudicarie line. During the Middle-Upper Miocene, a NW-directed compression produced sinistral compressional strike-slip (transpressive) movements along the Giudicarie line and dextral strike-slip movements together with minor compression along the Tonale fault.
