Abstract

The construction of the basilica of S. Petronio in Bologna started in 1390 and required the demolition of various earlier civil and religious buildings. The steps in front of the church have a complex supporting structure with a series of vaults, and the first of which was utilized in XV century and later for the disposal of human remains. During restoration of the basilica and of the church-square, were found strata of rubble used as foundations for the church-square; the materials found included buildings debris (i.e. broken bricks and fragments of marble), pottery fragments and kiln refuse. Under this fill were found provisional structures pertaining to the construction site and remmants of earlier buildings, among which were series of pillar bases and a vaulted cellar, dating around the XII century, situated under the main door of the basilica.
