Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing how learning evidence is generated and interpreted in schools. While automated tools may enhance formative assessment through more timely and adaptive feedback, they raise ethical and pedagogical concerns about judgment, accountability, and the reduction of evaluation to automated measurement. Grounded in recent scientific literature, this article examines the relationship between AI and formative assessment in school contexts, integrating Italian and international perspectives. Results indicate that AI can support teachers in monitoring learning processes and promoting personalization. However, automated scoring tools struggle to evaluate creativity, argumentation, and relational aspects of learning, which remain central to educational judgment. A new ecology of evaluation is therefore advocated, where teacher responsibility, algorithmic transparency, and students’ agency are preserved, ensuring fairness and meaningful learning.

Abstract
A new ecology of evaluation is therefore advocated, where teacher responsibility, algorithmic transparency, and students’ agency are preserved, ensuring fairness and meaningful learning.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
