Interview with Manuel Portaceli

Manuel Portaceli Roig (Valencia, 1942) is a Valencian architect and one of the most significant figures in contemporary Spanish architecture. His professional career has developed across architectural practice, critical reflection, and intervention in the built heritage. His best-known works include the rehabilitation of the Benicarló Palace, seat of Les Corts Valencianes; the restoration of the Roman Theatre and Castle of Sagunto, in collaboration with Giorgio Grassi; and the extension and reorganisation of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia (San Pío V). The author of numerous writings and essays on architecture, the city, and heritage, he has also pursued an extensive activity as a critic and architectural thinker. He has received various distinctions, including the Spanish Architecture Award, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, and the 2026 Piranesi Prix de Rome alla Carriera, awarded by the Accademia Adrianea di Architettura e Archeologia and the Ordine degli Architetti di Roma.
