The essay questions the ways in which some italian scholars of the first half of the twentieth century faced moments of cultural and political disintegration, which required an idea of humanity built on the strenght of a thought that has its costitutive trait in the recognition of incompleteness, of the costitutive imperfection and defectivity of man. Factors that refer to the human possibility of creating, to its constitutive plastic capacity as an element of a Bildung that allows incorporating and transforming what comes from the past. These are the elements that distinguish the idea of a humanism that is given through the formative force of man, offering the possibility of building the past in the light of present, so that the authentic historical sense does not lie in oblivion, but in the ability to creatively identify what is useful to life, what is show through research and education, expressing itself in the effort and tension towards the novum.
