This study explores the influence of Plautine tradition on Florentine comic dramaturgy during the first fifty years of the sixteenth century—a crucial period for the emergence of modern theatre. Through a selected corpus of eight plays, the research focuses on the ways in which classical sources were rewritten, adapted, and blended, with particular attention to structural, typological, and stylistic elements derived from Plautus. The analysis highlights three main strategies of reuse: direct reworkings of Plautine plays, combinations of archetypes from multiple classical comedies, and the integration of Latin elements into original plots. Supported by analytical case studies with parallel texts, the study demonstrates how Florentine comedy gradually moved away from medieval traditions, developing an autonomous form that, while rooted in ancient models, anticipated many features of modern theatre.

Abstract
This study explores the influence of Plautine tradition on Florentine comic dramaturgy during the first fifty years of the sixteenth century—a crucial period for the emergence of modern theatre. Through a selected corpus of eight plays, the research focuses on the ways in which classical sources were rewritten, adapted, and blended, with particular attention to structural, typological, and stylistic elements derived from Plautus. The analysis highlights three main strategies of reuse: direct reworkings of Plautine plays, combinations of archetypes from multiple classical comedies, and the integration of Latin elements into original plots. Supported by analytical case studies with parallel texts, the study demonstrates how Florentine comedy gradually moved away from medieval traditions, developing an autonomous form that, while rooted in ancient models, anticipated many features of modern theatre.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
