A generalized Coleman-Noll procedure is applied to analyze thermoviscoelastic solids of grade 3, namely, solids with constitutive equations depending on the third spatial gradient of the deformation. Some new forms of stress tensor and specific entropy are obtained. For small deformations, the equilibrium problem is studied for onedimensional systems. An explicit form of the displacement is calculated. A comparison with the equilibrium theory of Korteweg fluids is carried out.
