According to the epistemological assumption that thinking, cognition and morality are achievements of the human brain, and that brain originated through the organic evolution, in this paper I discuss the problematic relationship between metamorphosis of nature and moral self-transformation of men in some passages of Goethe’s Naturwissenschaftliche Schriften, making explicit what we should be looking for when we consider the development of mental functions in a normative sense.
