Abstract

Italy is scattered with “marginal territories”, places where forms of living suffer the effects of abandonment but at the same time are available to welcome new cultures. In these fragile contexts, the potential for development is strong but access to and quality of basic services are often denied. The SNAI National Strategy for Inner Areas identifies and describes the characteristics and strengths of different geographical marginal areas. In the Lucania case study, the knowledge of the territory and places of the “Montagna Materana”, through the surveying and cataloging of complex urban areas has made it possible to experiment with projects and visions of architecture and landscape, for the protection, valorization, regeneration, and economic and social development of the ancient villages in continuity with the contemporary city and the sustainable integration between forms of nature and the built environment.
