Livestock biodiversity in mountain areas: rearing of donkey, a possible alternative - A study was carried out considering the morphological characteristics and the biometric parameters of local donkeys and their distribution in Basilicata Region. This species even if it has a low presence in Basilicata region it is well distributed on regional land; in fact, it is reared in 93 of the 131 communes. The most of the observed animals presented blackish coat. Morphometric characteristics and zoometric indexes showed a donkey consisting in a dolichomorphic type similar to ‘Martina Franca’ breed.
