The article aims to focus on the scientism that characterized the European temperament at the turn of the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, characterized by a marked interest in psychology and scientific study of the various mechanisms of unconscious processes. It is no coincidence that Pascoli's privileged source for the elaboration of his treatise on aesthetics, Il Fanciullino, are the well-known Sudies of childewood by the English psychologist James Sully. However, little mentioned so far are instead the papers presented by the "scientists of the human psyche" in the countless international conferences and congresses organized in those very years on these issues, which gradually became fundamental also for literati, philosophers and poets. Noteworthy is the "Fifth International Congress of Psychology," held in Rome April 26-30, 1905. A flagship event highly publicized in the press of the time, almost entirely devoted to Consciousness, it was followed with keen interest by Pascoli and most of his literary contemporaries.
