ARCHITETTURE SANITARIE DEL ‘900. VALORE E NEGAZIONE NELLE AZIONI DI RECUPERO. L’ EX SANATORIO DI ETTORE STELLA A MATERA

The paper summarizes an activity of historical research and critical analysis of the rehabilitation interventions of the former Sanatorium of Matera designed by Ettore Stella in 1949. The restoration of this Modern architecture has opened several debates on the preservation strategies to be pursued. According to some, the image of the building must be brought back to that of Stella’s original design, which, moreover, was never realized. This current of thought was shared in the project funded by the Basilicata Region for the construction of the Student House. According to others, however, the re-functionalization project should have preserved the formal characters of the former hospital complex of the 1970s. The work proposes a third way for the student house project that values the pre-existence and the entire history of the building.
