The article discusses an exchange of verses between Peter from Pisa and Paul the Deacon, charged with instructing the palatine clerici of Charlemagne. Paul responds with modesty and irony to Peter's thunderous gratulatio, who praises him for his skills in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew: he will then be able to guide the students in the study of the Bible and of the Ancient literature. A short list of authors probably intends to announce the innovative program of readings proposed by the grammaticus, and not the auctores regulati of the writer, and thus illuminates the important role of Paul in the start of the Carolingian Renaissance. Several historical and cultural elements prove the reliability of this testimony, often underestimated, among them the news on the seriousness of the Pavia school attended by Paolo in his youth.
