After Italy entered into the World War II, the strategic operation of the government, entitled "Iron to the homeland", called for every metal fence to be transformed into war material. Tens of kilometers of gates and fences were handed over to the General Commissariat to make weapons and ammunition. In 1940 the government decided to incentivize the production of new self-sufficient gates, replacing those stolen from Italian citizens. Steel or iron was no longer used as the main material, but this was replaced by brick, natural or artificial stone, glass or aluminum. These elements tell, through their history, the constructive evolution of the Italian construction industries and the ability of these to be able to adapt construction systems for different uses in the construction field.

Abstract
After Italy entered into the World War II, the strategic operation of the government, entitled "Iron to the homeland", called for every metal fence to be transformed into war material. Tens of kilometers of gates and fences were handed over to the General Commissariat to make weapons and ammunition. In 1940 the government decided to incentivize the production of new self-sufficient gates, replacing those stolen from Italian citizens. Steel or iron was no longer used as the main material, but this was replaced by brick, natural or artificial stone, glass or aluminum. These elements tell, through their history, the constructive evolution of the Italian construction industries and the ability of these to be able to adapt construction systems for different uses in the construction field.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
