Abstract

This article focuses our attention on a canvas painted by Paolo de Matteis for the Cathedral in Melfi, which depicts the Martyrdom of St. Alexander. The recent resto-ration of this masterpiece was carried out by the «Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro (ISCR)» in Matera, as Angelandreina Rorro illustrates here in her essay. Usually located on the upper part of the altar dedicated to the saint, the painting, which is finally visible close up and is fully restored, reveals the date of 1700 which is located near the well-known signature of the artist. This date determines the chronol-ogy of the creation of the masterpiece, and thus shifts it from those variously hypothe-sised by critics. This article sheds a new light on this painting, which marks a significant turning point, in a Rococò key, before the artist embarked on a journey to Paris between 1702 and 1705.
