On the occasion of the recent publication of Giuseppe Cantillo's book Il tormento della modernità. Religione, etica, filosofia della storia. Studi su Ernst Troeltsch, the article retraces Troeltsch's thought, which Cantillo investigates from the perspective of nihilism and the crisis of modernity. The analysis of Troeltsch's intellectual itinerary, characterized by the constant attempt to seize the circular relationship between history and transcendental in all the fields of cultural life, shows how the philosopher, far from passively resigning himself to the crisis of the Neuzeit, takes an active position in front of it and tries to trace the path along which it is possible to reinvent a common European spirit and to rethink together the natural rights tradition and the idea of Humanität.
