Although Potentia was one of the most important cities in the inner part of Roman Lucania, its urban shape and its settlement history are very little known within the general framework of ancient Italy. This is due to the poorness of literary sources and – mostly – to the uninterrupted continuity of life of the city over the centuries. Within such a lack of documentation, the contribution provided by ancient floors, unearthed in or immediately around modern Potenza, may be useful to better define the urban layout of the Roman city and the settlement modes of its suburbium.

Abstract

Although Potentia was one of the most important cities in the inner part of Roman Lucania, its urban shape and its settlement history are very little known within the general framework of ancient Italy. This is due to the poorness of literary sources and – mostly – to the uninterrupted continuity of life of the city over the centuries. Within such a lack of documentation, the contribution provided by ancient floors, unearthed in or immediately around modern Potenza, may be useful to better define the urban layout of the Roman city and the settlement modes of its suburbium.
