The article analyses the development of social media sites, both in the techological and socio-cultural dimension, in its relationship with the evolution of educational policies about the use of social media for educational purposes. The author shows how educational systems are currently geared to a profitable use of social media in educational activities – especially in e-learning context - and discusses about potentialities, disadvantages and risks of this trend, and, more generally speaking, about the increasingly intensive use of social media by young people.
