This paper sheds light, on the basis of unpublished documents, on a forgotten activity of Giovanni Mercati concerning the manuscripts of the Biblioteca Feliniana, Lucca. In the years 1900-1904 he worked at a catalogue of those manuscripts, on behalf of the Vienna Academy of Sciences, but, due to a series of problems, the cataloguing was eventually abandoned.
