The General Studium of Lleida was the first university founded in the territory of the Crown of Aragon. The foundation charter by James II (1300), is modeled on the foundation charter of Naples by emperor Frederick II (1224), transmitted by the so-called letter-collection by Petrus de Vinea. The article focuses on the relationship between the two documents. James II chose to use the Neapolitan model, on the one hand, to invoke the tradition of his ancestor Frederick, on which he based his claims on Sicily; on the other, to find rhetorical patterns for enhancing the royal origin of the university foundation. The documents provide further knowledge on the rhetoric network based on the letters by Petrus de Vinea, which had huge influence on the development of literature and medieval political propaganda.

Abstract
The General Studium of Lleida was the first university founded in the territory of the Crown of Aragon. The foundation charter by James II (1300), is modeled on the foundation charter of Naples by emperor Frederick II (1224), transmitted by the so-called letter-collection by Petrus de Vinea. The article focuses on the relationship between the two documents. James II chose to use the Neapolitan model, on the one hand, to invoke the tradition of his ancestor Frederick, on which he based his claims on Sicily; on the other, to find rhetorical patterns for enhancing the royal origin of the university foundation. The documents provide further knowledge on the rhetoric network based on the letters by Petrus de Vinea, which had huge influence on the development of literature and medieval political propaganda.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
