Abstract

The ars dictaminis is the most original form of theory and application of medieval rhetoric: it was used mainly in establishing rules for the perfect composition of letters, both official, and friendly. In this paper will be examined and published three letters written by notaries of theroyal chancery. They are fictitious and have animals as protagonists: they refer to the romance literature and to the Roman de Renart, but contain specific links with the political organization of Southern Italy in the 13th century and with the political conception of its Swabian kings.
