An experimental investigation on the local scour at bridge piers of composite width is presented. Two non-uniform pier configurations have been considered: i) a 2-width pier composed of a cylinder of diameter D founded on a larger cylinder of diameter D*, and ii) a 3-width pier composed of a cylinder of diameter D, a square pile cap, and 4 cylindrical circular piles of diameter d. Clear-water tests were made by setting the top of the footing at different elevations above and below the initial bed level. Based on experimental data collected, some effects of the foundation on the quasi-equilibrium scour depth and the temporal scour evolution are highlighted. The results are given in terms of equivalent pier or pile diameter (Deq, deq). A previously established scour equation for the temporal progress of scour was assumed as framework for this analysis.

Abstract
A previously established scour equation for the temporal progress of scour was assumed as framework for this analysis.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
