An end-to-end model has been developed in order to simulate the expected performances of the Water Vapour Lidar Experiment in Space (WALES). This numerical model includes a forward model, capable to simulate the different mechanisms of interaction of laser radiation with atmospheric constituents and the behaviour of all devices present in a water vapour DIAL system, and a retrieval model for the application of the DIAL equation. While the forward model is illustrated in a companion paper, the present paper carefully describes the retrieval model, providing an insight into the methodology applied and the equations considered. A modified form of the traditional Schotland equation is considered, accounting for Doppler broadening and Brillouin scattering.
