Abstract

A motor based on a flexible, long and thin steel wire capable to transfer mechanical power from the stator to the rotor is presented. The motor can generate a good mechanical power (max. torque 14 μNm, max. speed 3200 rpm) with unique property of high flexibility. A simple model, describing the power transfer mechanism, is presented; analytical results are compared with experimental measurements. The proposed motor will make it considerably easier to design systems where to use electrical power is expensive, difficult, or undesirable, as in medical probes
