The results of two-years trials (1991-92) carried out in two environments of Basilicata (Policoro and Irsina) on 4 cultivars of sweet sorghum (Foralco, Keller, Sofra and Vespa) in order to evaluate their yield potential under different irrigation and fertilization regimes are reported. The total biomass and green stalk production generally showed higher values at Policoro than at Irsina and far the crop receiving 100% maximum evapotranspiration (ETc). Among cultivars, Keller always gave higher yields and reached, at Policoro, peak values of 72 t ha-l of total biomass and 63 t ha-l of green stalks in the most irrigated treatment, against values respectively equal to 64 and 56 t ha-1, 58 and 49 t ha-l, 48 and 37 t ha-l for Foralco, Sofra and Vespa. The refractometric index of the stalk cell-juices was influenced only by the growing environment, the highest values being recorded at Policoro with respect to Irsina (on an average 18.9% versus 15%). At Irsina, the total biomass and green stalk yields of the four cultivars were about 25% lower.
