The PhD thesis in Medieval History aimed at conducting the study of the monastery of Santa Maria di Pierno, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built on the slopes of Mount Pierno in the territory of San Fele (PZ), was born in 2012 with a master's thesis work aimed at conducting a reconstruction and analysis of the history of the priory from its origins to the eighteenth century.
During the study of the events experienced by the church, however, I realized the scarcity of medieval sources at our disposal: most of these were dispersed or destroyed during the Second World War. Consequently, I tried to trace others, even from modern times, in order to try to understand what had happened in previous centuries; in this regard, in fact, carrying out an initial research at the State Archives of Potenza, my attention focused on the archival material pertaining to the church and included in the archival fund entitled "Doria-Pamphili Landi Company Archive".
It is a particularly varied fund, as it houses deeds of a heterogeneous nature, starting from the moment of arrival in the territory of Basilicata of the Doria family in the mid-sixteenth century up to the twentieth.
The fund was formed thanks to a first payment in 1962 by Princess Orietta Doria Pamphili of the Company's documentation, which was in turn kept at the castle of Melfi (PZ). The second nucleus, on the other hand, came into the archives in 1979; previously it was kept at the castle of Lagopesole (PZ). This fund, one of the most important in the Italian South in business matters, consists of 1399 pieces of envelopes, registers and about 11000 files, which occupy a number equal to five shelves enclosed in 173 compartments; however, it brings with it some gaps relating above all to management and consultation, and is lacking in adequate accompanying tools, such as to allow proper archival research.
Specifically, in fact, the fund lacks a complete and analytical inventory of the individual envelopes, but also a conformity between the digital inventory and the paper inventory present in the study room, available to users, which arrived in the archive at the time of payment and which still today presents itself in the original as it had been drawn up in the mid-20th century. Some envelopes are digitally presented only with the transcription of the objects present on the documents, other envelopes, on the other hand, are not filed.
This project, included in the PhD Course in History, Cultures and Knowledge of Mediterranean Europe from Antiquity to the Contemporary Age, Cycle XXXVIII, scholarship type: D.M. 251-72022 PNRR-research, consisting of four chapters and an appendix cataloguing documents in its last section, is in continuity with the previous master's thesis work. The aim of the doctoral thesis is not only to deepen the documentary research in order to try to trace further material not reported in the respective summary inventories, but specifically also to deliver to the State Archives of Potenza a complete and digitized analytical cataloguing of all the archival envelopes relating to the church of Santa Maria di Pierno, so as to provide a suitable and adequate accompanying tool for archival research, without subjecting the documents to further stress of manual control.
Fifteen archival envelopes have been filed for this thesis; two archival envelopes came to light during the work in the State Archives of which there was no account, for a total of 565 documents registered.
During the analysis, however, several problems were encountered, such as, for example, the absence in the archival deposits of archival envelopes marked on the inventories or, on the contrary, envelopes that were reported as pertinent to the church, but that inside them there is different material consisting mostly of miscellanies. We came across envelopes with completely missing sections of documents inside, folded parchments, documents that have now become illegible and in an extremely precarious state of preservation.
In the first phase relating to the implementation of the project, attention was paid to the compilation of the documents in such a way as to have knowledge of the material available, as well as to better define the criteria for cataloguing and inventorying.
This work also and above all served to make me reflect on how much it could be deepened from a point of view of historical investigation. The documents filed, in fact, report news dating back to the eleventh/twelfth century; for this period the originals are no longer preserved and therefore the late information preserved in the Doria Fund represents an important point of reference for historical research.
The documentation covers a period of time ranging from the sixteenth century, with references to material prior to these centuries, up to the nineteenth; It was decided, in agreement with the tutor, to file everything that refers to the Church, even when it is of contemporary times. It should also be emphasized that the chronological details on the envelopes do not always correspond to the actual dates of the documentation contained inside.
Making use of the documentation present in the State Archives in Potenza, I was then able to turn my gaze to other archives such as the Diocesan Archives of Potenza and Melfi, which also preserve material relating to the church, especially with reference to the Pastoral Visits, but for reasons of time it was not possible to proceed with a complete reconnaissance. I also viewed the material present in the Royal Holy House of the Annunziata in Naples, custodian of the documentation of the period of the Commenda di Montevergine, where there are also few, but precious traces on the church, generally documents of an economic nature dating back to 1416/1420. On these study occasions I was able to read a Memorial preserved in the archive and still unpublished today.
Equally important for study and research is what is preserved in the State Archives of Naples, specifically the Montevergine section of the Religious Corporations, with documents concerning the monasteries of Goleto and Montevergine together with their dependencies. Consequently, there are also traces relating to the church of Pierno.
In this regard, in fact, the documentation is extremely important since the church of Santa Maria di Pierno was one of the most important economic dependencies of Goleto, then united to Montevergine in 1515; the complex of San Salvatore (later San Guglielmo) del Goleto, located in the territory of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, has its origins in 1133 when it was built by Guglielmo da Vercelli, a figure of great importance in the panorama of the monastic history of the South in the Norman age. Local tradition has it that the two churches of Goleto and Pierno had the same founder, as they were built directly by Guglielmo.
A further link is then constituted by the destination of the two manuscript codices in which the Life of William is reported, written respectively one in Gothic and the other in Benevento. The latter was built around 1185-mid-thirteenth century and destined for the monastery of Goleto; the Gothic codex, on the other hand, written between the end of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth century, had as its patron community that of the church of Santa Maria di Pierno. The extremely important codices have recently been studied, with the publication of a new critical edition of the text, edited by Francesco Panarelli in 2004.
Further historical research investigations were carried out at the State Archives of Avellino, which resulted in the discovery of an archival envelope dedicated to the figure of Guglielmo da Vercelli and consequently information on the church of Santa Maria di Pierno.
The starting point for the study of the church still remains the first monograph made by Giustino Fortunato, historian and southerner of outstanding stature, published in 1899 and entitled "Santa Maria di Perno" to whom we owe the merit not only of having studied the events of the church, but also of having collected in appendix documents concerning it and which were preserved in the State Archives of Naples, no longer exist.
Regarding the foundations of the church, several hypotheses have been advanced, some support the pre-existence of a pre-Norman monastery, therefore built by the Basilian monks , but legend has it that it was Guglielmo da Vercelli who rebuilt it before 1142. On this, however, opinions are divided; what we do have for sure are the two inscriptions on the entrance portal of the church, still visible today, on which the dates of the beginning and end of the renovation are reported, respectively 1189 and 1197, with the dedication to Gilberto di Balvano , financier of the reconstruction works, as well as the name of the master builder, Saròlo.
During the research, we became aware of the indispensability of Norman sources for the study of the church of Santa Maria di Pierno. Its foundation must be placed in the climate of religious renewal within which Guglielmo da Vercelli was also placed, a figure often read as a precursor of what would later be the mendicant orders. The Norman monarchy certainly tried to use religion as a tool of support for the government of the conquered territories. From the analysis carried out, as will be seen later, it would seem that there is a thread that unites and binds together the monastery of Goleto, the church of Pierno, the figure of Guglielmo da Vercelli and the Norman monarchy through some families, such as that of the Balvano, who played a decisive role both in the events of the church and in relations with the politics of the Altavilla.
What is certain is that the church has been the protagonist of various vicissitudes that have led it to reach its maximum splendor, also and above all from an economic point of view, until then a slow decline, slowly losing everything it had built. Precisely because of its economic prosperity, the church became the object of clashes between the most important feudal families in the area. During the work of compiling the documents, in fact, I was able to verify how the church was, from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth, constantly at the center of lawsuits between the Doria family and the Caracciolo di Torella family, always with the aim of establishing which of the two families should hold control over the church and its assets. The clashes went on until the definitive abolition of feudalism.
Following what was defined in the initial project, the thesis is divided into four chapters. The first is configured as an introduction to the phenomenon of monasticism, specifically Benedictine, feminine and double form that affect both the mother monastery of San Salvatore al Goleto, and its dependency or the church of Santa Maria di Pierno. The second chapter focuses on the investigation of southern monasticism in the Norman Kingdom of Sicily; here I tried to contextualize Benedictine and Italo-Greek monasticism, the ways in which religion was received by the monarchy and a comparison between the two important figures of William of Vercelli and John of Matera. The third chapter focuses on the comparison between the monastery of Goleto and the church of Pierno, with the drawing of a historical profile for both and an in-depth study of the vicissitudes of the church. The fourth chapter is entirely dedicated to a Memorial found in the Archives of the Royal Holy House of the Annunziata in Naples; inside there are news relating to the church drawn up on the occasion of a dispute that arose between the Prince of Torella and the Prince of Melfi for the acquisition of the church; it was decided to insert the transcription from the original.
The last part, the most substantial, consists of an appendix containing the archival cataloguing; A brief presentation of the method followed in the cataloguing is followed by the archival examination such as to deliver an analytical inventory of about 565 documents relating to the church in question. The documents are filed and listed individually; for each of which the original object is registered where present, the document number, topical and chronic date and for each the respective register. The envelopes filed in total are eighteen as they are merged with the four envelopes previously filed.
This doctoral thesis work, in addition to presenting the historical events that have affected the church and the monastic community settled in Pierno, has provided a tool, to be made available to the State Archives of Potenza, which represents a tool for the protection and conservation of documents concerning this wonderful ecclesial complex and gives all scholars a means that can facilitate research.
The work, therefore, is divided into two parts: in the first we focused on what historical and bibliographic investigations have brought to light in recent years; the second, on the other hand, is of a more purely archival nature.
Since any treatment of the history of Western monasticism cannot be exempt from the analysis of Benedictine monasticism and its Rule, the first part of the work concerns precisely Benedictine monasticism, female and of the double form, since these are linked both to the monastery of San Salvatore al Goleto - the first Italian example to have the double form - and to its main dependency or the priory of Pierno, also linked to the figure of Guglielmo da Vercelli. Benedictine monasticism is the basis of the foundation of many monastic complexes, desired both by sovereigns and by wealthy lords who increasingly saw in ecclesiastical institutions an instrument of power, as well as of personal purification of the soul. Furthermore, throughout the early Middle Ages, in addition to the evangelization of the territories that still remained pagan, the monks were entrusted with the task of transmitting knowledge; Benedict spoke of lectio divina, that is, the reading of sacred texts, emphasizing the importance of intellectual and prayer work, what should be read within the walls of the cloister and how important was the copying activity, mostly of ancient and sacred texts.
Among the most important figures in Benedict's life was his sister Scholastica, who was also present several times in the Dialogues of Gregory, devoted to religion since she was a child, founder of a women's monastery.
In this regard, analyzing female monasticism leads us to reflect not only on the function that women played within the monastery, but also, more generally, on their broader role in society. Unfortunately, the sources available to us do not offer the opportunity to study women's spirituality in depth. More information is obtained especially from the twelfth century for central and northern Italy through the notarial registers, but information from within the communities themselves, i.e. drawn up by women, is not easily found or at least the sources available in this sense are scarce. However, it can be argued that if women on the one hand played a marginal role and struggled to obtain their own recognition, on the other hand some of them managed to distinguish themselves even in spite of male dominance.
This is demonstrated by the cases of abbesses who during the Middle Ages had a role that was anything but marginal and who indeed we find fully included in political-social decision-making contexts. An example in this sense is the monastery of San Salvatore al Goleto, organized in a mixed form, whose abbesses, certainly linked to important families and involved in political life, managed to give vigor to the community and to guarantee a remarkable development both to the mother monastery and to its dependencies.
The co-presence of nuns and monks takes place in monasteries defined as "double monasteries" in which, that is, there was, albeit in two separate buildings, the male and female presence; in addition to cases such as Prémontré, southern Italy saw the construction of monasteries partially attributable to the double type, this especially from the twelfth century, in the wake of what was preached by William of Vercelli and John of Matera, leading exponents of the hermit and reformed currents.
In our case, a particularly important place is occupied by Guglielmo da Vercelli and the construction of what is considered the oldest example of an Italian double monastery: San Salvatore al Goleto. Among its dependencies there is also the church of Santa Maria di Pierno, with characteristics similar to those of the mother monastery, as also in this case there seems to have been a monastery reserved for nuns and a building built next to it, probably suitable for accommodating the male component.
In the case of the monastery of San Salvatore al Goleto, founded by the Vercelli saint, the management was placed totally in the hands of the abbess; consequently it exercised both temporal and religious power. Over the decades, the abbesses managed, one after the other, to enter more and more into the political plots and to play an important economic role at least for a couple of centuries. In the Pulsano Congregation, on the other hand, a real female branch was not formed; the entire early period of Giovanni da Matera's training was not characterized by the appearance of female religious figures, even if the scene of the foundation of Pulsano itself is dominated by the presence of a celestial woman who from above indicates to Giovanni the locality of Pulsano, flanked by the archangel Michael. There was no shortage of female priories subject to S. Maria di Pulsano, sometimes even too crowded. The main community, however, will never be presented as female; on the contrary, the first designation is completely male.
The church of Santa Maria di Pierno was born and developed right in the heart of the Middle Ages, at a time when the fame of William of Vercelli and the Norman monarchy grew. In fact, the second chapter tries to address this theme and to compare it also with Italo-Greek monasticism. The Norman-Swabian period constitutes an ambiguous era during which Italo-Greek monasticism took on a double nature: on the one hand the religious Latinization of the population of the Greek rite and on the other hand almost a rebirth of at least some elements of Greek religiosity. This can be seen from the numerous documents that attest to a development of Greek monasticism during the twelfth century as well as a participation in the movement of rebirth of Greek culture in the Norman context.
There was also the continuous presence of Greek bishops in numerous southern sees or Latin monasteries. The latter were often intended as tools aimed at guaranteeing control of the territory and the establishment of a network of friendships, often they were directed by personalities chosen by the leaders of the conquest in the circle of friends and relatives.
The concession of Greek monasteries to Latin abbeys seems to respond to a desire to support these fragile communities that led the Normans to grant even small Latin monasteries to large Latin abbeys. The Norman kings favored both Greek and Latin monasticism, but they were also careful to control it, following a tolerant modus operandi and benevolence towards Greek monasticism. This figure shows how much the rulers knew how to adapt to pre-existing situations and identify monastic centers that were able to build a connective network with the territory, necessary for the consolidation of the conquest. It seems clear, therefore, that we are faced with a heterogeneous southern Italy from a religious point of view: the Benedictine monasteries were already present at the time of the arrival of the new conquerors and with them they found an enrichment, but we must not forget that the return of Greek monasticism was supported by the Hauteville, as well as the relations between Greek monasticism and the new Latin abbeys founded especially in Calabria and Puglia.
Furthermore, the papal intervention in Norman Italy cannot be overlooked, an intervention that often remained undersized until the Swabian era, except for a few cases until the death of Frederick II, also because from the moment the pope chose to support the Norman conquest, he also tried to take advantage of it for the purpose of spreading the principles of the reform. This is noticeable, especially in southern Italy, from the middle of the eleventh century, through the instruments of propagation and application of the reform on a local scale. Interesting, in this regard, is the data relating to papal interventions in the Italian South that only partially affected Greek monasticism, but mainly concerned Latin monasticism: see, in fact, the pope's trips to these areas both for councils and for the consecration of churches, such as that of the abbey of Montecassino in 1071 or the consecration of the basilica built in honor of St. Nicholas of Bari, to house the relics of the saint stolen by sailors from Bari in 1087.
The consecration of the churches became in the time of the reform an instrument for the development and expansion of the reform itself, just as 1098, the moment of the Council of Bari, represents an important moment coinciding with the granting of theApostolic Legacy; this privilege reflects an essential point of the sovereignty of the Hauteville in southern Italy and Sicily as the sovereign considered himself the head of his church.
The king, in fact, defined the boundaries of the new dioceses created in Sicily or modified the characteristics of the diocesan geography in Calabria and Apulia, approved the election of abbots and did not disdain to be depicted as crowned by Christ. It is clear that there was an ability to instrumentalize any monastery in the context of the control of the territory and its institutions and, in fact, the questions just exposed help to understand the poor ability of the popes to intervene in Norman Italy, limited above all to moments of difficulty for the Norman king.
In southern Italy, in fact, there was no open and decisive opposition between the sovereigns and the papacy in the manner of the Western monastic reform. It was rather the king who placed himself as a supporter of changes or approvals as is demonstrated by the support for the installation of Bruno of Cologne, but not only that, the cases of approval of William of Vercelli and John of Matera, who could count on the support of Roger II, are known. The religious policy that emerged during the years of the reign of the Hauteville, also through the use of old and new Benedictine and Italo-Greek structures, profoundly characterized the events of Southern Italy; during the twelfth century there were cultural transformations and political experiments that particularly conditioned the social composition of the Kingdom. Especially in the first decades of domination, in fact, apart from cases in which churches and monasteries suffered destruction, the dukes and then sovereigns were careful to create a socio-cultural structure based on the exchange of two cultures, Greek and Latin, which, despite all the difficulties and differences, ended up coexisting; a structure that, unfortunately, failed at the end of the Norman domination and with the beginning of the Swabian one when, that is, with the Concordat of Gravina of 1192 most of the privileges that the Norman sovereigns enjoyed over the Papacy were lost.
It is clear that preachers such as William of Vercelli and John of Matera were able to fully fit into this climate of political and social renewal begun in the South by the Normans with their arrival.
The church of Santa Maria di Pierno is linked, in a particular way, to Guglielmo as legend has it that it was he who built it and then to the mother monastery of Goleto as evidenced by a privilege of Ruggiero, bishop of Rapolla, in 1141, with which the church was donated to the monastery of Goleto. This was the beginning of an intense bond so much so that, over time, S. Maria di Pierno would become one of the richest dependencies of Goleto.
The main protagonist of the rise of the church was undoubtedly the Balvano family. We know that as early as 1174 Riccardo di Balvano, the progenitor of the family, had made some donations of land, but it is due to Gilberto II di Balvano and then to his wife Margherita that the decision to start the renovation of the building as evidenced by the inscriptions on the entrance portal of the church. From the analysis conducted, however, it appears that the Balvano family had important relationships both with the church of Santa Maria di Pierno, having been its main financier and protagonist of economic growth, and with the monastery of San Salvatore al Goleto and above all with the Norman monarchy.
It can be hypothesized that the church of Pierno may have been both the means to be able to show the family religious devotion of the Balvanos, and an instrument to express closeness and support to the Norman politics that had not only accepted Guglielmo's novelty, but had particularly favored him through the various concessions in favor of the monastery of Goleto.
It is natural to believe that the link between the church and the monastery was not only referable to a purely religious context, but one could also hypothesize a political-religious link that harmonized well with the new religious ferment started by Guglielmo, with Norman politics and also with the consolidation of local powers, in this case with the Balvano family first and then with their successors, or the Bisaccia. It should certainly not be forgotten that the Balvano family played a very important role during the reign of the Altavilla and it is likely that there was mutual collaboration in order to obtain greater political support in the territories where the church stands and in the surrounding borders.
The church, located in the basin of the Ofanto valley, not far from the city of Melfi, was one of the most important economic dependencies of the monastery of Goleto, a monastery in which several women belonging to the Balvano branch were monastic.
The special bond between the Balvano family and the Goleto monastery is now an acquired fact. Within this community, one of the most representative abbesses was Marina II, belonging to the feudal family, in which Gilberto I, son of Riccardo, royal commander, was Marina's great-grandfather.
Not only that, the link between the church of Pierno and the monastery of Goleto is also evident from the codices that report the life of Guglielmo da Vercelli: in fact, the Gothic codex, probably written in the mid-thirteenth century, had the church of Pierno as its main destination, while the Benevento codex, probably dating back to 1185 and the mid-thirteenth century, was written for the abbey of Goleto. The very destination of the codex makes us certain of the existence at least in the twelfth century of a monastic community in Pierno, which was therefore to all intents and purposes a priory populated by monks.
The church was then the victim of illicit usurpations to the detriment of the structure, such as the one perpetuated by Manfredi Maletta in the thirteenth century; this problem, however, also extended to the fourteenth century, when King Alfonso of Aragon was forced to order the officers of the Duke of Melfi to expel from the priory of Santa Maria di Pierno a certain friar Minichello da Teramo, prior of the Virginian order who presided over the administration of Goleto, because he was considered an intruder and therefore at the behest of the abbess of Goleto, so that the priory remained free to the monastery.
However, from the archival documentation consulted at the State Archives of Avellino it would seem that the church had been granted to Friar Minichello da Teramo and, therefore, if so, it would not be a question of usurpation; however, it must be taken into consideration that within the document itself there is the name of a certain Elisabetta de (Senerchia) who, however, is not among the known abbesses. Interesting, however, are the economic notes relating to the church and the various possessions from which cash income was received.
In the space of just over two centuries, the priory of Pierno found itself having to face the beginning of a real decline: some earthquakes damaged the structure, while in 1514 it was elevated to abbey and entrusted to Troiano II Caracciolo.
In 1515, together with Goleto, it was entrusted to the Holy House of the Annunciation in Naples. Other disagreements then arose between Atella and San Fele over the division of the fiefdom; in 1895 Pope Leo XIII assigned the church to the ordinary jurisdiction of the bishops of Muro Lucano. Among the families that had a considerable influence on the ecclesiastical complex must be counted first the Balvano, of whom we have said, who were particularly attached to the church so as to consider it almost as a family chapel, and then the Doria and Caracciolo di Torella families.
The latter entered the scene starting from the mid-sixteenth century, constantly lined up against each other due to a disagreement that lasted several centuries, arising from the ambiguous location of the sanctuary in the territory of San Fele, fief of the Doria, or in that of Atella, fief of the Torella. This disagreement fueled a long legal dispute.
During these years of work I have also tried to understand the current state of archaeological investigations and, thanks to the availability of Professor Emeritus Paolo Peduto, of the University of Salerno, who has completely made available to me the excavation repertoires, it has been possible to understand at least what were the results produced by the excavation campaigns of 2007, today stopped.
The fourth chapter is based on the transcription of a memorial found during research conducted at the Archives of the Royal Holy House of the Annunziata in Naples. Composed of 55 papers, the memorial, as usual, was used to historically attest to a right; the one in question was drawn up for the Prince of Torella, a useful owner of Atella, with the Prince of Melfi and the University of San Fele and materially drawn up by the then actuary Nicola Siviglia. At the beginning of the twentieth century it was then consulted by Giustino Fortunato thanks to the archivist D'Addosio. In all probability the figure of the Prince of Torella can be identified with that of Count Giuseppe Caracciolo who bought the land of Torella from Francesco Marino, tutor of Tommaso Caracciolo, for 55 thousand ducats and obtained from King Philip IV, in 1638, the title of Prince.
The memorial was drawn up for a dispute that was discussed before the Court of the Royal Chamber with the Prince of Melfi for the possession and respective location of the church of Pierno in the land of Atella and not in that of San Fele, as declared by the other party. The memorial, still unpublished, is of great importance taking into account the fact that the respective fiefdoms of Atella and San Fele were in dispute until the subversion of feudalism.
The last section, on the other hand, achieved its objective thanks to the compilation of the archival envelopes of all the material relating to the church of Santa Maria di Pierno, present in the Doria Fund deposited at the State Archives of Potenza. After an introduction to the work, the archival cataloguing follows.
It is heterogeneous material, with references to documents dating from the eleventh/twelfth century to the nineteenth century which, for completeness, have been reported.
During the cataloguing, however, some problems were caused by the lack of correspondence between what was present in the inventory of the Doria house, probably dating back to the time of deposit of the fund in the archive, therefore mid-twentieth century, and the physical confirmation of archival envelopes no longer present in the deposits of the State Archives of Potenza or problems related to the lack of possibility of re-managing documents, in this case an envelope, as it was in a very poor state of preservation as well as other documents now disheartened by the ravages of time and by parasites that have attacked them for years.
Initially, the envelopes to be regested were supposed to be sixteen; however, two of these are present only in the inventory, but are not found in the Archives, and a third is unfortunately preserved in a very poor state. During the cataloguing work, however, two further archival envelopes were brought to light with material relating to the church inside, of which there was no news. The final total is sixteen envelopes filed according to an archival criterion: name of the fund, shelfmark, chronological details, document numbers if present, name of the original document if present, topical and chronic date, number of papers for each document and respective register. During the cataloguing, in envelope 479 box 6, a parchment folded on itself was found in a good state of preservation relating to the controversy over jurisdiction over the territory of San Fele and Atella dated 1647.
565 documents have been filed for the present work which, together with the previous ones relating to four archival envelopes already registered, deliver a work of about 921 documents of considerable interest as they preserve copies of documents now lost, notarial deeds, disputes, parchments, lawsuits between feudal lords, news relating to the Balvano family and much more.
