The landscape of Monteserico in the Upper Bradano Valley, Basilicata Region, is the product of centuries of agricultural, infrastructural, and cultural stratification. Drawing on research conducted within the Landscape Architecture course of Post-Graduate School in Archaeological Heritage at the University of Basilicata, the paper reconstructs the diachronic evolution of the area and identifies the planning challenges it currently faces, first and foremost the conflicts between energy landscapes and historical-archaeological landscapes. Starting from this case study, the paper analyzes the state of the art of landscape planning in Italy with particu- lar reference to the topic of energy production from renewable sources. In this context, the Territorial Landscape Plan of the Apulia Region is considered the most relevant good practice. Finally, national and international debate is referenced to propose a designing vision based on landscape sensi- tivity, participatory processes, and territorial responsiveness.
