Inside the Gravina of Matera, where natural and cultural dimensions converge in a dialogue that transcends time, two remarkable sites of the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera stand out: the Church of Madonna delle Vergini and the Church of Madonna dei Derelitti. These sacred spaces, hewn directly from the rock and deeply embedded in historical stratification, bear witness to long-term processes of transformation, ranging from eremitic practices to organized communal worship. Over the centuries, they have interwoven agro-pastoral traditions with a persistent and deeply rooted religious devotion. The rupestrian interiors, marked by symbolic elements and residual traces of ritual practices now lost, continue to retain their vitality through ongoing liturgical celebrations and an uninterrupted devotional use. In these contexts, the relationship between material substance and spiritual experience becomes perceptible, fostering not only collective memory but also renewed approaches to the conservation and enhancement of an exceptional cultural heritage. The tangible and intangible values embodied in these sites continue to engage scholars and visitors alike, acting as a dynamic link between past and present.

Abstract
The tangible and intangible values embodied in these sites continue to engage scholars and visitors alike, acting as a dynamic link between past and present.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
