In his Vita et passio s. Christinae virginis et martyris Alfanus of Salerno (ca. 1020 - 1085) makes the martyr quote some tales about the heathen gods, which she attributes to Apuleius and Varro. A revision of the text and an analysis of the passage in question lead to the conclusion that Alfanus has in fact heavily drawn on Cicero’s De natura deorum, Lactantius’ Divinae institutiones, and especially Augustin’s De civitate Dei, in order to fabricate these fake quotations
