The research focuses on the “fourth estate” exercised by the periodical press in Basilicata, under Giolitti administration, of matters regarding educational and scholastic issues; it shows the analysis of two opposite examples of journalism: «La Squilla Lucana» (1901-1921) socialist paper directed by Raffaello Pignatari and «La Provincia» (1908-1915), Potenza’s catholic fortnightly directed by Don Vincenzo D’Elia. The examination of these papers allowed a complex and comparative analysis of education and school policies. The teaching press is a strong source of the educational historiography, it supports the investigation on the development of national training processes and the following effect on the local trend.
