The present paper aims to discuss the status of Jerusalem from the Seleucid era to the outbreak of the great revolt against Rome, with particular attention to the early Roman period. Its transformation into a polis and the character of its city governing bodies will be examined. The greater or lesser level of selfadministration held by the city in the different phases of its history will also be taken into consideration.
