The study examines the demographic trends and the effects of population ageing at a regional scale, making a comparison between two European regions: Bretagne and Basilicata. The former experienced a transition from being an emigration area to a phase of demographic growth; the latter has a shrinking population and an intense ageing process. In more detail, the impact of demographic trends is analyzed with respect to the recent emigration of young and qualified people and the possibility of local economic development.
