During the siege of the fortress of Eira at the time of the Second Messenian War, Aristomenes (according to Pausanias) encouraged his comrades, reminding them of the exploits of the Smyrnaeans who were able to repel Gyges. In his speech, Rhianus (Pausanias’ source) probably alluded to some lines of Mimnermus about Gyges’ partial (and temporary) seizure of Smyrna and the distant Messenian origin of the city.
