We applied a new analytical procedure directly on peat samples in order to characterize the molecular composition of its organic matter. We separated organic compounds according to their solubility and resulted in 4 residues (RES), 3 organ-soluble extracts (ORG) and 3 water-soluble extracts (AQU). The structural identification was conducted by GC-MS, liquid state 1H NMR and solid state 13C CPMAS NMR. The results showed that organic matter becomes more aromatic passing from the O and A horizons to the B and C horizons, thereby suggesting a process of organic matter diagenesis.

Abstract
We applied a new analytical procedure directly on peat samples in order to characterize the molecular composition of its organic matter. We separated organic compounds according to their solubility and resulted in 4 residues (RES), 3 organ-soluble extracts (ORG) and 3 water-soluble extracts (AQU). The structural identification was conducted by GC-MS, liquid state 1H NMR and solid state 13C CPMAS NMR. The results showed that organic matter becomes more aromatic passing from the O and A horizons to the B and C horizons, thereby suggesting a process of organic matter diagenesis.File in questo prodotto:
