Rural areas are those territories characterized by the depopulation phenomena in favor of central urban areas, constituting a generalized social cost linked to the abandonment of traditional land uses, hydrogeological risks, degradation and disappearance of traditions. The paper analyses relevant policies issues considering tourism as the main development perspective of such territories. According to a strategic view of the territory, local development projects focus on exploiting the potential of local production, creating daily actions, attracting tourists, promoting sustainable mobility, renewable energy and sustainable interventions, effective ecosystem management consequently reduction of social costs. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
