The theme of recovery of historical centers is the focus of the debate on architecture for several decades in Italy and Europe, and in recent years is spreading in China. When we are called to attend to historical artifacts, we must follow a precise path of investigation and knowledge of them; it needs to start from certain references, as treatys, manuals and codes of practice, and find again the capacity for dialogue and collaboration with the places, the materials and the proper tools of the generations that preceded us. A prerequisite for a project of urban regeneration is the acquisition of design data from a complete, deep, and scientific analysis of historical, architectural, stylistic, constructive, technical, and structural. Has, therefore, a key role in the investigation concerning the relationship that exists between architecture, tradition, and construction.

Abstract

The research, on topics of knowledge for the recovery of memory and identity of architectural features of a place started with the analysis and the survey of restricted portions of a large number of case studies in Italy and in the Mediterranean, and was consolidated with depth in southern and eastern China. The theme of recovery of historical centers is the focus of the debate on architecture for several decades in Italy and Europe, and in recent years is spreading in China. Often, today, the tireless research of technical skills and extreme solutions, brings architects to lose the feeling of being able to recognize and enhance the identity and the memory of the city in which are involved with projects that eliminate the boundaries, borders, and margins between the city and community and individuals environments. In contrast to this method of work, is becoming an increasingly important role in the issue of exploitation and renewal of the places where it is layered history of ancient civilizations. The current situation, I think, could be regenerated in qualified forms, if only has been properly understood in its mode of growth, aggregation and adaptation. The research aims to bring to the attention of Chinese researchers the contribution of ideas and thoughts that Italian architectural tradition and sensibility can provide, for the recovery and preservation of Chinese cultural heritage, ancient or recent. The intent is to set the groundwork to provide a complete picture of the use of materials and state of conservation of artifacts, with the aim of the regeneration of parts of cities with common features of identity and memory, to start a process of recovery, respectful of the types and original materials of traditional Chinese architecture. The privileged tool of travel sketchbook, therefore, has been tried to assimilate and recognize, making them own, a large number of forms and ways of living in the Chinese architectural tradition, investigated to practice and experiment with a new reflection and sensibility of the previous experiences, in an effort to extend and renew them. Through careful and critical observation, formalized through sketches, graphical annotations, and notes, has been understood aspects which are the architectural complexes studied.
