Based on laboratory tests on partly-full flow culverts, an empirical model for prediction of the maximum scour depth at the oultet is given. In particular, the role of the densimetric Froude number is highlighted. By extending the same approach to the case of full-flow culverts and analysing literature data, analogous scour formulas are presented for both submerged and unsubmerged outlet conditions. The results are presented in terms of fundamental hydraulic parameters to allow for a simple and straight forward application to engineering design.

Abstract

Based on laboratory tests on partly-full flow culverts, an empirical model for prediction of the maximum scour depth at the oultet is given. In particular, the role of the densimetric Froude number is highlighted. By extending the same approach to the case of full-flow culverts and analysing literature data, analogous scour formulas are presented for both submerged and unsubmerged outlet conditions. The results are presented in terms of fundamental hydraulic parameters to allow for a simple and straight forward application to engineering design.
