The work describes the potential use of the non-destructive diagnostic technique of Ground Penetration Radar through the discussion of results obtained during an investigation campaign carried out in the Sassi, the oldest districts of the city of Matera. The settlement of Neolithic origin represents an extraordinary testimony of social housing that preserves the memory of living in caves and applies the principles of sustainability of building and solidarity of living in community with the sharing of space and resources in the urban structure of the neighbourhood. Investigations of both ground and built components have performed by means monostatic shielded antennas with different frequencies. The two-dimensional radargrams obtained with the 600 MHz antenna has led to the identification of an embankment and a probable cistern in an urban chamber of the Sasso Caveoso. The use of the 3 GHz antenna for the analysis of a masonry parapet within the Sasso Barisano, chosen as in situ simulacrum, has showed the effectiveness of the technique in defining the masonry texture.
