Starting from experimental results on RC beam-column connections, the problems linked to the assessment of the seismic response of RC existing structures are treated. In this paper the elementary response mechanisms are shown, and modeling criteria are described for each mechanism, stressing on the peculiar characteristics of the existing buildings in Italy and in the Mediterranean area. The theoretical and experimental studies are in the framework of the main seismic codes and analysis methods, once some uncertainties to be investigated are set. The experimental campaign will end with pseudodynamic tests on a 2:3 scale 2 floor model structure, designed in absence of seismic code. Different retrofit techniques will also be tested on the same model.
