The byzantine monastic settlements played a fundamental role in the economic recovery and in the settlement reorganization of Basilicata between the early Middle Ages and the Middle Ages. They will be entrusted with the exploitation of the resources of the rural territory as well as the revitalization of the demographic and economic structure of some territorial sectors, in particular in the southern part of the region. In particular, it was the inland areas that hosted most of the monastic settlements and benefited from their activities, through the foundation of new settlements, the deforestation and transformation of the uncultivated areas and reorganization of the secondary communication network. The rich and articulated frame of the territorial extension of the possessions and rights of these monasteries, attested by a fair amount of documents, together with some material evidence highlights the recovery, between IX and XI century of many territorial areas, also separated from the arteries of main traffic and communication of the region, due to the civilian population and under the control of the monasteries, which thus reveal themselves in their physiognomy of landowners. This paper presents some data from a European research project dedicated to the Byzantine cultural heritage in Basilicata (Byherinet), and the results of a study on the transformation of the post-antique settlement of Basilicata, linked to the evolution of the network of byzantine monasteries.

Abstract
This paper presents some data from a European research project dedicated to the Byzantine cultural heritage in Basilicata (Byherinet), and the results of a study on the transformation of the post-antique settlement of Basilicata, linked to the evolution of the network of byzantine monasteries.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
