Manufacturing of poplar oriented strand board (OSB), recently started in northwestern Italy, represents a relevant novelty for the national wood sector. These panels are lighter and lighter-colored compared to OSB traditionally made of coniferous wood and are mainly intended for packaging and some building applications. The difusion of poplar OSB on the market can contribute to sustain the Italian poplar cultivation sector that sufe - red a considerable contraction in the past years. Thermal treatment consists in exposing wood to high temperatures, usually from 160 ° to 240 °, in a controlled environment. It has undergone a remarkable development during the last decade and it is nowadays considered a reliable method to improve some wood properties. In brief, it darkens the color of wood and enhances its dimensional stability and natural durability; on the other side, the thermal modification sensibly reduces the mechanical properties of wood. Thermal treatment is particularly interesting for poplar wood, that being light-colored and characterized by a low natural durability can highly benefit from the modifications induced. The contribution firstly introduces the characteristics of poplar OSB in order to give an overview of this innovative wood-based panel. Then, a preliminary investigation on the suitability of poplar OSB to thermal treatment is reported: poplar OSB panels were treated at 190 ° and some properties were compared with those of control panels.
