The framework of the research project AGER ‘An Italian Vitis Database with multidisciplinary approach, for exploitation and valorization of the regional genotypes’ was the protection and valorisation of the numerous regional grapevine varieties in Italy. This proposal comes from some the ‘Italian Group for a Vitis database’ including several Italian Research Institutions and Universities operating in the viticultural and enological sector. Morphological, physiological, bio-molecular and technological traits of local grapevine varieties of Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Tuscany, Latium, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily were investigated. The partners of this project described approximately 700 accessions belong to about 400 varieties. All data obtained by this project, together with others previously collected by each partner, will be reversed in the “Italian Vitis Database” (www.vitisdb.it) previously developed by the University of Pisa. The access to the database is free and the information presented at public level are checked and certified by the principal investigator responsible for the single variety. Moreover, the database is not just dedicated to researchers, but it is also devoted to breeders, vine-growers and wine makers; this is one of the major distinctive traits among other Vitis databases freely available on line.
