Following a preliminary screening on semen quality within a genetic rabbit centre, we found some bucks showing abnormal ejaculates. These bucks (n=8) together with control animals (n=3) were sampled once weekly and semen characteristics analysed. Related to an abnormality scale, ejaculates were classified in 5 groups (1=normal ejaculates; 5=ejaculates with urines). Urea analysis revealed that urine contamination increased from groups 1 to 5. The animals under investigation repeated this contamination in most of the collected ejaculates; hence, the attitude of some animals to produce ejaculates contaminated with urine may be classified as a behaviour abnormality. Bucks affected by this defect should be excluded from semen production activities.
