The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of exposure of active clays to liquids different from their pore liquid and the influence of initial stress state and of stress history on osmotic volume changes. To this aim, two clayey soils with very different c.f. and activity index have been exposed to distilled water or to concentrated salt solutions. The results show that chemically induced volume decrease may be reversible or not, depending on the composition of clay minerals, pore liquid, the liquid to which the clay is exposed, void ratio and stress level.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of exposure of active clays to liquids different from their pore liquid and the influence of initial stress state and of stress history on osmotic volume changes. To this aim, two clayey soils with very different c.f. and activity index have been exposed to distilled water or to concentrated salt solutions. The results show that chemically induced volume decrease may be reversible or not, depending on the composition of clay minerals, pore liquid, the liquid to which the clay is exposed, void ratio and stress level.
