ABSTRACT: The authors have recently proposed a morpho-evolutive mechanical model to interpret the geomorphic characteristics of the accumulation zone of earth-flow landslides and its evolution. It is based on a passive failure mechanism at the toe of the flow channel. This paper presents an analytical formulation of the proposed passive failure mechanism. The presented mathematical model has been applied to back calculate shear strength parameters along the toe shear surfaces of the huge Balzo del Prete earth-flow landslide in Southern Italy.
